The Southeastern Arcature

It is located near the eastern side of the southern end of the yard of the Dome of the Rock, which lies in the center of Al-Aqsa Mosque. It was established during the Fatimid period in 412 Hijri\ 1021 AD. It was renovated during the Ayyoubi period in 608 Hijri\ 1211 AD.

It is made of two huge hinges in the sides and a marble cylinderical pillar in the middle. It has stairs of 19 stone steps, and its height reaches between 6.5 and 7 meters.

Between this arcature and the southern arcature in the yards of the Dome of the Rock, there is a sculpture inside the stone wall, which has the shape of a platform and has the same height of the low wall. It is thought that it was made this way as an indicator for the direction of Qibla. It was most probably established during the Ottoman period when the yard of the Dome of the Rock was paved. However, the date of establishment remains unknown.
